Johnny Depp is an esteemed actor known for appearing in many popular movies like Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward Scissorhands.
He began acting professionally since the 1980s. His initial fame came via 21 Jump Street as a teenage heartthrob; later on, he featured as Freddy Krueger’s victim in A Nightmare on Elm Street.
How did Johnny Depp start his career?
Johnny Depp was born June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky to parents who divorced when he was fifteen. Subsequently, he lived in over twenty different places during his childhood as his mother worked as a waitress while his father had issues with alcohol abuse.
Johnny first learned to play guitar at 12 years old and soon after joined The Kids group as part of nightclub performances where they would win big money! Additionally, Johnny took up painting music covers.
At 18 he decided to leave his job as a telemarketing pen salesman to follow his dream. Although friends advised he return to school, he insisted on following his passion instead.
At twenty-two, he joined a band with his friend and performed in bars around London. His talent soon won over one young female fan who used to be interested only in men.
In 1990, he had the chance to showcase his acting versatility as the title role in Tim Burton’s fantasy film Edward Scissorhands starring David Carradine – this became his breakthrough performance and began many great collaborations between them both.
Since then, he has established himself as an actor known for taking on serious, somewhat dark roles that consistently surprise audiences and critics alike. His willingness to embrace darker roles has made him a household name as has his work in big-budget films like Pirates of the Caribbean.
At first, his career struggled but after the success of Edward Scissorhands he began taking acting more seriously. Landing an appearance on 21 Jump Street in 1987 proved crucial and allowed him to fully commit himself to studying acting – this proved his turning point and led to greater opportunities in acting roles across television and movies. This success marked the true beginning of his success story.
Soon thereafter, he made his mark as one of the lead actors in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), earning himself his first Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. Additionally, he appeared in Sleepy Hollow (1999) and Alice in Wonderland (2010).
How old was Winona Ryder in Edward Scissorhands?
Winona Ryder made her big screen debut at 17 in 1988 in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice and immediately after in Edward Scissorhands (1990). These roles cemented Winona as one of Hollywood’s premier actresses.
After appearing in numerous teen roles such as 1989 cult classic Heathers and coming-of-age drama Mermaids, she transitioned into more adult films. In 1990 she co-starred with Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands before joining Keanu Reeves the following year for Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula with Francis Ford Coppola.
Early in her career, her style was fairly subdued and subservient – often consisting of wearing black dresses with slick back hairstyles and bold red lips. But once she took on Alien Resurrection (1997) as lead, her look changed significantly with the adoption of a short pixie crop haircut.
As she got older, she gradually adopted more masculine tailoring and more show-stopping gowns like the Alberta Ferretti number she wore at the 2011 SAG Awards. Recently she has made an appearance as Joyce Byers on Netflix’s Stranger Things.
She played a warped child psychologist in Asia Argento’s The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, and recently guest starred on popular shows such as The Simpsons.
But she has not ruled out playing more conventional roles in the future; she has appeared in period pieces such as Gillian Armstrong’s adaptation of Little Women, where she played Josephine March, and Nicholas Hytner’s 1996 adaptation of The Crucible.
The actress found inspiration from Louisa May Alcott’s novels as well as from her own upbringing in Minnesota. She has amassed an extensive library, including Catcher in the Rye.
Winona Ryder has maintained her public visibility for five decades now, remaining an iconic fashionista with exquisite style. On October 29, she turns 50.
Ryder is best known for her powerful, dark performances; she has become synonymous with portraying supernaturally gifted, sinister figures in many cinematic masterpieces like Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice; as an at-risk teenager in Edward Scissorhands; and as Dracula’s reincarnated love interest – each role playing to Ryder’s strengths as she will likely take on even more complex female roles over time. Her career seems sure to continue prospering as more complex feminine roles arise for her in future films!
Is Edward Scissorhands a Christmas movie?
Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands is an intriguing fantasy about a young man (Johnny Depp) created by an inventor but with scissor hands instead of human ones. Unfortunately, before giving Edward human hands, the inventor passes away; but before then he took great care in teaching him manners and reading poetry to Edward.
Edward is left without a parent after the inventor dies, living alone at his mansion until an Avon saleswoman named Peg (Dianne Wiest) comes along and takes him home. Peg believes makeup and meatloaf can bring about change for Edward, yet soon discovers that he remains alienated and alien in both environments.
Edward Scissorhands begins whimsically, yet its second half ends abruptly and with a surprising turn that might take some viewers by surprise. While this does not diminish its enjoyment or make it less satisfying overall, it may take time to adapt and may disorient some audiences.
In the final act of the film’s final act is an emotional bookend sequence set both present and past. We see an elderly Kim recount a story about Edward to her granddaughter; though she hasn’t seen him again since his disappearance, snow still falls annually in their neighborhood as a reminder that Edward remains part of our world and it brings great comfort that this older Kim shares her feelings with her granddaughter.
Edward and Kim become involved in an unorthodox romantic relationship despite its restrictions, one that proves moving. Their bond remains one of the most striking in all of cinema.
As with many of Burton’s movies, this one features an element of magic and wonder. Visually pleasing with great performances by its cast. There’s much more going on than simple fantasy in this story!
There is an undercurrent of darkness in this story that makes for a somber film experience. Esmerelda (O-Lan Jones) proves an enormous turnoff for Edward, while Joyce’s vulgar behavior toward men also creates an uncomfortable scene.
